Word for 2016: Compassion

I have been thinking a lot about what I want 2016 to represent. I’ve landed on one word: Compassion.

Why compassion? There are a few reasons.

It appears to me that lately in the news cycle there is a focus on creating divisions between people (war, ideology, displacement, etc.), rather than generating an understanding for others and their stories. Emphasis on difference and pitting people up against one another creates a sense of unnecessary fear and division within our collective humanity. Compassion and generosity, despite differences, creates a more stable and healthy world. I wish for a compassionate, unifying vision to be the guiding force of our global energy.

Within our individual lives, we must act out of compassion for others who continue to push us, even if we did not ask to be tested. There are lessons in challenges. We must allow ourselves to listen instead of shut down when being uncomfortably expanded. Listening to your emotions leads to learning and self-awareness. We must pay attention to what shows up in moments of discomfort, and take responsibility for our own reactions.

It is important for us to detach ourselves from past harmers and the pain that we have endured and experienced. In order to do this, we need to practice compassion towards our previous harmers. Compassion leads letting go of past disappointment, heartbreak, expectations and regret. Compassion leads to forgiveness. It means changing the story we tell ourselves about our pasts. These painful experiences gave us more than we bargained for, and it is with insightful compassion that we can learn to be grateful for them. We can change our perspective through compassion.

Lastly, we must practice compassion towards ourselves. This is probably the most important compassionate act we can implement. If you don’t learn how to treat yourself with loving compassion, how can you expect others to? We must learn to stop the negative self talk and forgive ourselves for our past decisions and actions. We must embrace who we are and have been. There is nothing we can do about our histories now — only process, understand, learn and forgive. And LOVE.

I’m personally setting a deliberate intention to use compassion with myself and with those I love in 2016. I am also going to make compassion the guiding principle through which I continue to build my coaching practice. In 2015, I softly placed it into the world and I am excited to expand it in 2016.

Yearning for chaos.

As much as I appreciate being relieved from heartbreak and heartache, I sometimes yearn for the chaos I was living through when those feelings were present in my life. I yearn for the depth of emotion I felt and for the rawness of it all. I felt so alive then. Every step, every breath, every word was noticeable. It took effort. My emotions were in the drivers seat. Now my in-tact heart carries me forward.

At times I want the fuel of devastation to make me a gentler writer, creator, and better/slower human being in general. I’m not sure there’s a way to manufacture those feelings without re-living those tragedies or encountering new ones, which I don’t really want to do.

Destruction can propel inspiration. Sometimes the easy way is not the most expansive way. Coasting is nice, but depth is lacking.

Music helps me. The rawness of emotion in certain songs make me recall my own feelings of sorrow. They bring me back to those dark days, when I was weeding through heart storms. I sit back, absorbing the pain coming out of the speakers, and relive mine.

These hard times are teachers. Soak them in while you can, even while immersed in the agony. Some day you may wish you had them back.

Sharing is Caring

I am one month into my new coaching business, and I am full of so much excitement and joy to have the opportunity to share with others what I have learned. I feel I am truly servicing and caring for my fellow humans while coaching. This business was soooooo meant to be!

It’s crazy to think that exactly 3 years ago, I was sitting in gorgeous Jamaica feeling sad and miserable at the recent loss of a loved one. I have gone through a divine transformation in getting from there to here.

Turning a devastating low into such a high is possible. I feel grateful for having had that painful experience, for if I didn’t, there would be no Heart Coach Brianna, no Mighty Love Coaching nor any of the benefits my coaching program will give others. There is opportunity in everything, even the stuff we don’t like living through.

Mighty Love Coaching is finally here!

Hello!!!! I’m so excited to be back blogging on my new website. My blog is now a part of my coaching business website, Mighty Love Coaching. I’m not an IT professional by any means, but I think it looks pretty darn good! I designed everything here myself. 🙂

I am excited-nervous-terrified-scared-giddy to get this business off the ground. I began building a coaching practice last fall, using my blog and experiences as a platform for doing so.

I found I deeply missed the rewarding heart-centered work I was trained as a social worker to do. Being in academia has its own perks, but often requires a lot more head work than heart work.

I also began to realize I had something unique to offer to women based on my own background and experiences.

Through my coaching program, I am offering women freedom from 2 things: 1) Freedom from the reliance on others to make you happy and 2) Freedom from the traditional narrative on what ‘happily ever after’ means. It’s time to foster and write our own new love stories.
